Answer first

What this calculator tells you

Convert between bits and bytes per second, from bps to gigabytes per second. Turn an internet speed in megabits into the megabytes per second a download shows. Formula: Result = value × (from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor), factors relative to bits per second; 1 byte = 8 bits. At the worked-example inputs, the converted value is 12.5. Holding every other input steady, moving value from 80 to 120 moves the result from 10 to 15.

Transparent method

The formula

Result = value × (from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor), factors relative to bits per second; 1 byte = 8 bitsAt the worked-example inputs the converted value is 12.5. It rises with from and value and falls as to increases.

How to interpret the result

Internet speed is sold in bits per second, and files are measured in bytes, with eight bits to the byte. A 100 megabit connection therefore moves at most 12.5 megabytes each second, which is the number a download window shows. The prefixes are decimal here, a thousand at each step, as network gear uses them. Real transfers run below the line rate because of protocol overhead and other traffic. Reference values: 8 megabits per second is 1 megabyte per second, and 1 gigabit per second is 125 megabytes per second. A 1 gigabyte file needs about 80 seconds at 100 megabits per second under ideal conditions.

At the worked-example inputs the converted value is 12.5. It rises with from and value and falls as to increases.

Interpretation boundary

Conversion factors are exact defined constants; results are limited only by floating-point precision, not by real-world estimation.

Before you rely on it

What to check

Note whether the unit is a lowercase b for bits or a capital B for bytes. The case carries the factor of eight.

The common error

Where people go wrong with data rate converter calculator

Expecting a 100 megabit plan to download 100 megabytes per second. The best case is one eighth of that, and real speeds are usually lower.

Sensitivity evidence

How value changes the converted value

Holding every other input at the worked-example value, moving value from 80 to 120 moves the converted value from 10 to 15: a spread of 5, or 40% of the worked-example result.

Inputs, definitions and assumptions

Value

Enter the value used in this calculation. The prefilled worked-example value is 100.

From

Unit to convert from. The prefilled worked-example value is Megabits per second.

To

Unit to convert to. The prefilled worked-example value is Megabytes per second.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Verify the inputs. Gather value, from and to from your own documents; the prefilled values are examples.
  2. 2Save a baseline. The worked example puts the converted value at 12.5. Store your own version of it as Scenario A.
  3. 3Test one change. Start with to, the input with the biggest effect here: switching to changes the converted value: bits per second gives 100,000,000; kilobits per second gives 100,000; megabits per second gives 100; gigabits per second gives 0.1; bytes per second gives 12,500,000; kilobytes per second gives 12,500.
  4. 4Check the boundary. Read the interpretation boundary above before acting on the result.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate data rate converter?

Result = value × (from-unit factor ÷ to-unit factor), factors relative to bits per second; 1 byte = 8 bits. At the worked-example inputs the converted value is 12.5.

What does the data rate converter result mean?

Turn an internet speed in megabits into the megabytes per second a download shows. At the worked-example inputs the converted value is 12.5. It rises with from and value and falls as to increases.

How much does value change the converted value?

Holding every other input at the worked-example value, moving value from 80 to 120 moves the converted value from 10 to 15, a spread of 5.

What are the limits of this data rate converter calculator?

Conversion factors are exact defined constants; results are limited only by floating-point precision, not by real-world estimation. The tables on this page test value only from 80 to 120; a value outside that range is not tabulated here.

Which input moves the converted value most in the data rate converter calculator?

Ranked by how far each moves the converted value across the range tested: to (100,000,000, 799999999%), from (100,000, 100000%) and value (2.5, 20%).

How much does from matter in the data rate converter calculator?

The worked example uses Megabits per second. With the other inputs left at the worked example, switching from changes the converted value: bits per second gives 0.00001; kilobits per second gives 0.013; megabits per second gives 12.5; gigabits per second gives 12,500; bytes per second gives 0.0001; kilobytes per second gives 0.1.

How much does to matter in the data rate converter calculator?

The worked example uses Megabytes per second. Holding every other input at its worked-example value, switching to changes the converted value: bits per second gives 100,000,000; kilobits per second gives 100,000; megabits per second gives 100; gigabits per second gives 0.1; bytes per second gives 12,500,000; kilobytes per second gives 12,500.

Which inputs change the 1 unit of "from" in "to" units in the data rate converter calculator?

At the worked-example inputs it is 0.125. From takes it from 0 to 1,000 and to takes it from 1,000,000 to 0.00013.

Are unit conversion factors ever approximate?

Most modern conversion factors, an inch to millimeters, a pound to kilograms, are exact defined constants by international agreement, not measured approximations. The only rounding that happens is in how many decimal places the result displays, never in the underlying factor.

Why is a US gallon different from an imperial gallon?

They're defined differently by historical convention: a US gallon is about 3.785 liters, an imperial (UK) gallon is about 4.546 liters: roughly 20% larger. Always confirm which gallon a recipe, tank spec or fuel figure is using before converting.

Exchange rate : glossary term
The price of one currency stated in units of another. Published reference rates like the ECB's are the neutral benchmark. A bank, card network or exchange adds its own spread on top of that.
