How to interpret the result

Prorated rent charges a fraction of a month for the days you hold the space. At $1,800 a month, a 30-day month costs $60 a day, so 12 days is $720. The month's own length sets the daily rate. A 28-day February makes each day cost more than a 31-day July, which is why the same move-in can produce different bills.

At the worked-example inputs the prorated rent is $720. It rises with monthly rent and days occupied and falls as days in the month increases.

Before you rely on it

What to check

Ask which method the lease uses. Some leases divide by 30 or by 365 over 12, and that changes the total by a few dollars.

The common error

Where people go wrong with prorated rent calculator

Dividing by 30 in every month. In a 31-day month that undercharges each day and in February it overcharges, so the total drifts from what the lease says.

Two variables at once

Prorated rent by monthly rent and days in the month

Across the grid the prorated rent runs from $480 to $1,080. Moving monthly rent from $1,440 to $2,160 shifts it by $288 at the middle column, and moving days in the month from 24 to 36 shifts it by $300 at the middle row, so days in the month is the bigger lever here.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate prorated rent?

Prorated rent = monthly rent ÷ days in the month × days occupied. Enter monthly rent in dollars. At the worked-example inputs the prorated rent is $720.

What does the prorated rent result mean?

Check a landlord's first or last month figure before you pay it. At the worked-example inputs the prorated rent is $720. It rises with monthly rent and days occupied and falls as days in the month increases.

How much does monthly rent change the prorated rent?

Holding every other input at the worked-example value, moving monthly rent from $1,440 to $2,160 moves the prorated rent from $576 to $864, a spread of $288.

What are the limits of this prorated rent calculator?

This educational estimate omits individual tax and legal considerations. The tables on this page test monthly rent only from $1,440 to $2,160; a value outside that range is not tabulated here.

Which input moves the prorated rent most in the prorated rent calculator?

Ranked by how far each moves the prorated rent across the range tested: days in the month ($145, 20%), monthly rent ($144, 20%) and days occupied ($120, 17%).

If I double days in the month in the prorated rent calculator, does the prorated rent double?

Doubling it from 30 to 60 takes the prorated rent from $720 to $360, which is 0.50 times the worked-example figure. So it falls instead of rising. Halving it to 15 gives $1,440.

How much does days in the month matter in the prorated rent calculator?

The worked example uses 30. Holding every other input at its worked-example value, moving days in the month from 27 to 33 takes the prorated rent from $800 to $655, a swing of 20% of the worked-example figure.

How much does days occupied matter in the prorated rent calculator?

The worked example uses 12. With the other inputs left at the worked example, moving days occupied from 11 to 13 takes the prorated rent from $660 to $780, a swing of 17% of the worked-example figure.

At the worked-example inputs it is $60. Monthly rent takes it from $54 to $66 and days in the month takes it from $67 to $55.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide by the number of hours actually worked in a year. For employees, using a standard full-time figure is a reasonable approximation. For freelance work it is not, because unpaid time, self-employment obligations and benefits an employer would otherwise cover all have to be added first.

Why is a 20% discount followed by another 20% not 40% off?

Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price instead of the original. Two successive 20% reductions leave 64% of the original price, a 36% total discount. Sequential percentages multiply. They do not add.
