The ECB reference observations dated 2026-10-16 quote 1 euro as 1.1253 US dollars and 177.82 Japanese yen. Dividing 177.82 by 1.1253 gives 158.020084 yen per US dollar, so the static $100 example converts to 15,802.01 yen. The interactive currency selectors can show a different pair using the same cross-rate method.

These are dated reference figures, not an executable exchange offer.

Enter the amount and the exchange rate, the value of one US dollar in the target currency. The page can fetch a dated European Central Bank reference rate, published once each business day, and falls back to a dated snapshot if the feed is unavailable. Check the date shown beside the rate.

Banks, card networks and exchange desks apply their own rates and fees, so the amount you receive differs.

Currency Converter: formula

Converted amount = amount × exchange rate

European Central Bank reference rates (via Frankfurter) · ECB: Euro foreign-exchange reference rates

Common error: Assuming the rate you see is the rate you will get. A card or an airport counter can charge several percent above the reference rate.

The ECB publishes reference rates for information, and a bank, card network or exchange desk can use a different rate or add fees. The tool does not guarantee a transaction price or compare all-in provider costs. If the live feed fails, the clearly dated ECB snapshot remains visible; do not describe that fallback as a current live market quote.

A currency converter multiplies an amount by a reference rate, and the number to watch is how the rate compares with what you will be charged. At a reference rate of 156.25 yen to the dollar, $100 converts to 15,625 yen. Banks, cards and exchange counters add a spread or a fee, so the amount you receive is lower.

The live rate on the page is a dated reference rate and it moves through the day.

Compare the reference rate with the rate on your quote and work out the difference as a percentage. That percentage is the real cost of the transaction.

Compare prices with the percentage change and discount calculators, and taxes with the VAT calculator. The inflation and real yield calculators show purchasing power over time, and the unit price comparison helps abroad. For travel budgets, the trip cost and cost of living pages help.

Understand the quantities in this calculation

How is a cross rate obtained from euro reference quotes?

Divide the target currency per euro by the source currency per euro. That gives target units per one source unit, which is then multiplied by the amount.

Does the reference rate include my card or bank’s charges?

No. Compare the actual provider rate and all separate fees for the same currency direction and amount. The reference is informational rather than an execution guarantee.

Is this the rate my bank or card will actually give me?

No. This shows the European Central Bank's daily reference rate, published once per ECB business day and used across the industry as the neutral benchmark, not a bank, card network or exchange quote. A transaction quote can include a provider spread and explicit charges.

Compare the actual amount received after all fees; no universal spread is assumed. Compare a quoted rate against this page's rate to see the spread being charged

Why did the rate change since I last opened this page?

The rate updates whenever the underlying feed publishes a new figure: daily on ECB business days, not continuously through the day like a trading terminal. If you reload later on the same day, you may see the same rate; the next change lands on the next ECB business day

What happens if the live rate feed is down?

The page falls back to a dated reference snapshot and says so plainly: it never silently shows a stale rate as if it were current. Re-check once the live feed is back before relying on the number for an actual transaction

Why is my bank's exchange rate worse than the one shown?

Banks and exchange desks add a margin to the midmarket rate and may charge a fee, so you receive less than the reference rate suggests

How often do exchange rates change?

Continuously in the market, but reference rates such as the ECB's are published once each business day

What is the best way to pay abroad?

Compare the total amount debited and the currency received after the quoted exchange rate and every explicit charge. A card, cash exchange and dynamic currency-conversion offer can have different fees. Compare the actual offers for the same purchase rather than assuming one payment method always costs less.
