Loans & Payments calculators
Loans & Payments calculators: Compare payments, borrowing costs, terms and payoff strategies. The category holds 15 tools, including the Loan Payment Calculator, the Loan Affordability Calculator and the Loan Payoff Calculator.
Start with the Loan Payment Calculator when you know the amount, rate and term and want the monthly cost. Use Loan Affordability when the question runs the other way, starting from what you can pay each month. Loan Comparison lines up two offers side by side, and APR shows what fees add to the quoted rate. If you already have a loan, Loan Payoff and Loan Prepayment Penalty show what paying early saves or costs, while the Amortization Schedule lists every payment. Balloon and Installment calculators cover the less common structures. Shop rates. Then shop again.
Among the tools here are Loan Payment Calculator, Loan Affordability Calculator, Loan Payoff Calculator, Simple Interest Calculator, APR Calculator, Loan Comparison Calculator, Balloon Loan Calculator, Amortization Schedule Calculator, and 7 more that follow the same pattern of formula, worked example, limits and sources.

Where people go wrong with loans & payments numbers
The most common error is comparing loans on the monthly payment alone. A longer term lowers the payment and raises the total interest, sometimes by a wide margin. The second is ignoring fees: an origination fee or prepayment penalty changes the real cost, which is why the APR and fee calculators exist. Also check whether the rate is fixed, since a variable rate makes any payment estimate a snapshot. Read the fee schedule first. Total cost tells the truth.

Definitions
Loans & Payments terms
- Amortization : glossary term
- The scheduled process of reducing a loan balance through payments that cover interest and principal.
- Amortization schedule : glossary term
- The payment-by-payment table. It shows how each payment divides between interest and principal, and what balance remains after each one.
- Annual percentage rate (APR) : glossary term
- An annualized borrowing-cost measure that may include the interest rate and certain finance charges.
- Balloon payment : glossary term
- A large final payment remaining after smaller scheduled loan payments.
- Origination fee : glossary term
- A charge for processing a loan, deducted from proceeds or added to the balance. It changes effective cost without changing the payment, which is what APR captures.
- Prepayment penalty : glossary term
- A charge for repaying a loan early, which reduces or eliminates the saving from paying ahead. Its presence should be checked before assuming early payoff saves the remaining interest.
- Principal : glossary term
- The amount borrowed or invested, before interest. Interest on an amortizing loan is charged on the outstanding principal, which is why early payments are mostly interest.
- Simple interest : glossary term
- Interest charged only on the original principal, never on accumulated interest. Distinct from amortizing interest, which is charged on the declining balance.
- Term : glossary term
- The length of a loan or the period of an insurance policy. On a loan it is the strongest lever on total cost and the weakest on the payment.

Common loans & payments questions
What is a good interest rate on a personal loan?
There is no single figure, because pricing depends on credit profile, term, amount, whether the loan is secured, and prevailing rates at the time. A more useful test is comparative: gather at least three offers for the same amount and term, compare them on APR , not rate so fee structures are included, and treat anything materially above the others as needing an explanation.
Does applying for several loans hurt my credit?
Most scoring models treat multiple enquiries for the same type of credit within a short window as a single shopping event, precisely so that comparing offers is not penalised. The window length varies by model. Applying for several different kinds of credit at once is treated differently and generally does have more effect.
What is the difference between a secured and unsecured loan?
A secured loan is backed by collateral the lender can claim if you default, which lowers their risk and usually the rate. An unsecured loan has no collateral, so pricing depends more heavily on credit. The trade is real: the cheaper secured rate is paid for with the asset you pledged.
Can I pay off a loan early without a penalty?
Many consumer loans allow it. But some contracts include a prepayment charge, and precomputed-interest contracts may not refund unearned interest in the way you expect. Check the note for a prepayment clause and for how interest is calculated before assuming early payoff saves the full remaining interest.
Why is my APR higher than my interest rate?
Because APR includes certain finance charges alongside the interest rate: origination fees and other costs that regulation requires to be counted. A gap between the two is normal and indicates fees exist. A large gap means the fees are substantial relative to the amount borrowed.
Should I choose a lower payment or a shorter term?
A shorter term costs less in total and builds equity faster, at a higher required payment. A longer term does the opposite. If the shorter payment is comfortable it usually wins. If it is not, taking the longer term and paying extra voluntarily captures most of the saving while keeping the option to stop in a difficult month.
What happens if I miss a loan payment?
Typically a late fee, interest continuing to accrue on the unpaid balance, and after a contractual grace period a report to credit bureaus. The consequences escalate with the length of the delinquency. Contacting the servicer before missing a payment usually produces more options than contacting them afterwards.
How is a loan payoff amount different from my balance?
A payoff quote includes interest accrued from the last payment to the quote date, and may include a prepayment charge or fees. It is valid only to a stated date, after which per-day interest continues. Always request a dated payoff figure instead of paying the statement balance.

Loans & Payments calculator questions
How do I compare two loan offers?
Compare the APR and the total cost over the full term, not just the monthly payment, since fees and term length change what you really pay.
Does a shorter loan term save money?
Usually yes on interest, because you borrow the money for less time, though the monthly payment is higher and needs to fit your budget.
What is an amortization schedule?
A table listing each payment split into interest and principal, showing how the balance falls over the life of the loan.
