Plumbing calculators
Plumbing calculators: Size pipe, flow, drainage and water heating for common residential plumbing tasks.
Use inside diameter for held volume and flow, and the specified pipe material and conditions for friction. Fixture units and permitted sizing come from the adopted code and actual fixture arrangement.
Pipe Volume Calculator
Size a flush, fill or drain-down volume before you start work.
Inputs: Pipe diameter, Pipe length
Open calculator →02Flow Rate (GPM) Calculator
Check that a supply line can deliver the flow a fixture group needs.
Inputs: Pipe diameter, Flow velocity
Open calculator →03Drain Slope Calculator
Confirm a drain run meets the standard 1/4-inch-per-foot minimum slope.
Inputs: Pipe run length, Slope
Open calculator →04Drainage Fixture Unit (DFU) Calculator
Pipe diameter needs the adopted code, fixture outlet requirements, run type, slope and venting.
Inputs: Private gravity toilets, 1.6 gpf or less, Lavatory sinks, Showers or tubs, Dishwashers
Open calculator →05Water Heater Sizing Calculator
Compare storage first-hour ratings and tankless flow at the actual required temperature rise.
Inputs: Duration of simultaneous peak draw (minutes), Other hot-water gallons during the same peak hour, Required temperature rise (°F), Fixtures used at once, Average flow per fixture
Open calculator →06Pipe Friction & Pressure Loss Calculator
Check that friction loss won't leave a distant fixture under-pressured.
Inputs: Flow rate, Pipe diameter, Pipe length, Roughness coefficient (C)

Where people go wrong with plumbing numbers
An assumed inside diameter of 1 in and length 100 ft encloses π/4 × 1² × 1200 = 942.478 in³, about 4.080 gallons. Nominal pipe size is not necessarily its inside diameter.

Common plumbing questions
How much slope should a drain pipe have?
Required grade depends on the adopted code, pipe size, system and installation. Use the approved design slope to calculate drop and confirm it with the responsible authority. This geometry tool does not model solids transport or establish one minimum or maximum grade for all drain piping.
Why does pipe diameter matter more than pressure for flow rate?
Flow capacity scales with the square of the diameter. So a small increase in pipe size adds disproportionately more capacity than the same increase in pressure. That is why undersized supply lines create weak flow at every fixture downstream, no matter how strong the incoming pressure is
What is a drainage fixture unit, and why not just count fixtures?
A DFU is a standardized weighting of how much drainage load a fixture actually contributes, not just its water use. A toilet contributes far more DFU than a bathroom sink even though both are one fixture, because its discharge volume and rate are much higher, and pipe-sizing tables are built around DFU totals, not fixture counts
Should I size a water heater by tank capacity or first-hour rating?
Tank capacity alone can be misleading. Recovery rate determines how much hot water is actually available in the first hour of use, not just how much sits in the tank at rest. Two 50-gallon tanks with different burner or element sizes can have very different first-hour ratings
Why does a tankless water heater need a higher flow rate rating in winter?
A tankless unit heats water on demand across a fixed temperature rise, not from a stored reserve. Colder incoming groundwater in winter increases the required temperature rise for the same output temperature, which lowers the maximum flow rate the same unit can deliver
Does pipe material change friction loss for the same size and flow?
Yes: the Hazen-Williams C-factor used in friction-loss calculations is higher, meaning smoother, for materials like copper and PVC than for older or corroded galvanized steel, so two pipes of identical diameter and flow can show meaningfully different pressure loss depending on material and age
Can a drain line be oversized?
Yes. A drain pipe sized well beyond what its DFU load requires can run at a shallower effective depth of flow, which slows velocity and can leave solids behind instead of carrying them to the sewer, so pipe-sizing tables set a maximum as well as a minimum
Why do plumbing codes vary between UPC and IPC jurisdictions?
The Uniform Plumbing Code and International Plumbing Code are maintained by different code bodies and differ in some fixture-unit values, pipe-sizing tables and venting rules. Always confirm which code your local jurisdiction has adopted. The numbers a calculator uses may not match a different code's table exactly
What slope should a drain have?
A quarter inch per foot is the usual minimum for small drains, with an eighth inch per foot allowed for larger pipes in some codes
How do I size a water heater?
Match the tank's first-hour rating or a tankless unit's flow to the household's peak hot water use, based on the number of people and fixtures
What is a drainage fixture unit?
A code value for the load a fixture puts on the drain, used to choose the minimum pipe size
