Day of the Week Calculator

Find what day of the week any date falls on, and its day of the year.

Useful for verifying a historical date or planning a recurring event. At the worked-example inputs, the day of the week is Friday. The result names the day of the week for the date and its ordinal day in the year. On the example, the date falls on a Friday and is the 359th day of the year. It is handy for planning: checking whether a date falls on a weekend or a holiday, finding out which day you were born, or working out whether a recurring date will land on a weekday next year. Combine with the business days calculator for schedules. It returns day of the week, day of the year.

How to interpret the result

The Gregorian calendar's day-of-week pattern doesn't repeat on a simple, predictable annual cycle, because leap years shift the pattern irregularly, which is exactly why a specific date's weekday can't be reliably guessed from memory or a rough mental shortcut and instead needs to be calculated directly against the actual calendar.

Before you rely on it

What to check

Verify a specific historical or future date's weekday through direct calculation rather than a remembered pattern or estimate, particularly across a range that spans one or more leap years.

The common error

Where people go wrong with day of the week calculator

Assuming a date falls on the same weekday every year based on a remembered pattern. Leap years shift the weekday-to-date relationship irregularly, so a date's weekday from one year doesn't predict the same date's weekday even one year later.

Where the inputs come from

Enter any date in the calendar you use: the tool works for past and future dates in the Gregorian calendar. It uses the count of days since January 1, 1970, which was a Thursday, and takes the remainder when divided by seven. Use it to check the day of a historical event, a birth date, an upcoming deadline or a scheduled appointment, and to see the day of the year, from 1 to 365 or 366.

When the result stops applying

The Gregorian calendar was adopted at different times in different countries, so dates before the change, such as before 1752 in Britain and its colonies, follow a different calendar and the calculator does not adjust. Time zones can shift the date near midnight. Some cultures use different calendars.

What to compare it with

See the interval between dates on the date difference calculator, count down on the day counter, and add days on the add days to date page. The business days and age calculators help with schedules and records. Check local holidays separately, since they are not built in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the day of the week for a date?

Count the days from a known reference date and take the remainder after dividing by seven. The calculator does this automatically.

Does it work for dates in the past?

Yes, for dates in the Gregorian calendar. Dates before a country adopted it, such as before 1752 in Britain, followed the Julian calendar.

What is the day of the year?

The position of the date within the year, counting January 1 as day 1, which runs to 365 or 366 in a leap year.
