Where people go wrong with date & time numbers

Counting days between dates raises the question of whether to include the start and end dates, and the answer changes the total by one. Business day counts ignore holidays unless you subtract them, and holiday lists differ by country. Month lengths and leap years are why adding one month is not the same as adding 30 days. Time zones can shift a date when the two locations are far apart. Decide about endpoints. One day matters.

Epoch day : glossary term
A whole-number count of days since January 1, 1970. Date calculators use it internally, so date arithmetic reduces to integer subtraction.

Common date & time questions

Why might an age calculator give a different answer than expected?

Age in completed years only advances on the exact anniversary of the birth date. Someone born on March 15 is still one year younger than that on March 14, even though the calendar year has already changed: a source of frequent off-by-one confusion near a birthday.

Does date arithmetic account for leap years?

Yes: counting actual calendar days between two dates automatically includes every February 29 that falls in the range, because it's based on the real Gregorian calendar instead of a fixed 365-day approximation.

Why do some date calculators disagree by one day?

The most common cause is whether the calculation is inclusive or exclusive of the start and/or end date, and whether the visitor's local timezone shifts a date near midnight. This calculator works entirely in whole calendar days with no timezone dependency.

How far back does the Gregorian calendar apply?

Most countries adopted it in 1582 or later, replacing the Julian calendar. Date arithmetic before that point can be off by several days depending on which calendar system and country is in question: a genuine historical complication, not a calculator error.

What's the difference between a leap year and a leap second?

A leap year adds a full day (February 29) to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit. A leap second is an occasional one-second adjustment to clock time to keep it aligned with Earth's rotation: unrelated, and not something calendar-day arithmetic needs to account for.

Does the calculator count the start date or the end date?

It counts the days between the dates, so a range from the 1st to the 2nd is one day. A contract or notice period may count both ends instead, and the wording decides it. If yours does, add one day to the result.

Can I use these to count business days or working days?

Yes for weekdays: the business days calculator counts Monday through Friday between two dates. Public holidays differ by country, state and employer, so subtract any that fall inside your range yourself.

Why does adding a month not equal adding 30 days?

Months run from 28 to 31 days. So a month after January 31 falls on a different date than 30 days later. These calculators count days, not months, to avoid that ambiguity. If a contract says months, count by the calendar month.

What time zone do these date calculators use?

None. They count whole calendar days from the dates you enter, so a result never shifts because of where you or a server sit. The only thing read from your device is the date filled in as today.

Date & Time calculator questions

How do I calculate the days between two dates?

Subtract the earlier date from the later one, and decide whether to include both endpoints, which changes the count by one.

Does the business days calculator include holidays?

It excludes weekends, and any public holidays in the range must be subtracted separately since they vary by country and year.

How do leap years affect date calculations?

A leap year adds February 29 every four years, except most century years, which changes the length of spans that cross it.
