Body Composition calculators
Body Composition calculators: Estimate BMI, body fat, lean mass and other body-composition measures. The category holds 11 tools, including the BMI Calculator, the Body Fat Percentage Calculator and the Ideal Weight Calculator.
BMI is the quick screen, and Healthy Weight Range and Weight to Reach a Target BMI turn it into a range in pounds or kilograms. Body Fat Percentage, Lean Body Mass and Waist-to-Hip Ratio give more detail about how weight is distributed, and Body Surface Area is used in medical dosing. Ideal Weight applies several published formulas. For pregnancy, Pregnancy Weight Gain, Due Date and Conception Date follow standard guidance from a start date. Trends beat single readings.
Among the tools here are BMI Calculator, Body Fat Percentage Calculator, Ideal Weight Calculator, Lean Body Mass Calculator, Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator, Body Surface Area Calculator, Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator, Due Date Calculator, and 3 more that follow the same pattern of formula, worked example, limits and sources.

Body Composition calculators at a glance
Each row shows the headline figure that calculator returns at its own worked-example inputs.
| Calculator | What it answers | Headline output | Worked example |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMI Calculator | Use BMI as a population-level screen, not an individual diagnosis. | Body mass index | 25.1 |
| Body Fat Percentage Calculator | Track the trend over weeks , not a single reading. | Estimated body fat | 18.8% |
| Ideal Weight Calculator | Treat the result as a reference point, not a personal target. | Estimated ideal weight | 145.7 |
| Lean Body Mass Calculator | Compare lean mass over time instead of against a single benchmark. | Estimated lean body mass | 130 |
| Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator | Use alongside BMI, not as a replacement for it. | Waist-to-hip ratio | 0.85 |
| Body Surface Area Calculator | Clinical dosing uses BSA from a source your care team specifies. | Body surface area (Mosteller) | 1.9 |
| Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator | Gain is not linear. The first trimester typically adds very little. | Recommended total pregnancy weight gain | 30 |
| Due Date Calculator | Naegele's rule assumes a textbook 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14; an ultrasound-based estimate is more accurate for an irregular cycle. | Estimated due date | November 23, 2026 |
| Conception Date Calculator | Work backward from an ultrasound-based due date for the most reliable estimate; a due date based on an irregular cycle carries the same uncertainty in reverse. | Estimated conception date | March 2, 2026 |
| Healthy Weight Range Calculator | Read the range as a screening band, then talk to a clinician before setting a goal weight. | Lower end (BMI 18.5), lb | 118.1 |
| Weight to Reach a Target BMI Calculator | See the distance to a BMI target in pounds, then set a plan with your clinician. | Weight at the target BMI (lb) | 168.6 |
Where people go wrong with body composition numbers
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so an athlete can read as overweight, and it misjudges people of different ages and builds. Body fat formulas from tape measurements have an error of several percentage points. Ideal weight formulas disagree with each other because they are old and generic. Pregnancy dates are estimates from an average cycle. Use these numbers as conversation starters with a clinician, not as diagnoses. A number is not a diagnosis. Context matters.

Body Composition terms
- Body mass index : glossary term
- Weight relative to the square of height, used as a population-level screening measure. It does not distinguish muscle from fat.
- Body surface area : glossary term
- The total external surface area of the body, estimated from height and weight. Some clinical dosing and burn assessment work from it.
- Gestational weight gain : glossary term
- Weight gained during pregnancy, The recommended range is set by pre-pregnancy BMI category. There is no single target for everyone.
- Lean body mass : glossary term
- Total body weight minus estimated fat mass, covering muscle, bone, organs and water.
- Naegele's rule : glossary term
- The standard obstetric convention for estimating a due date: 280 days, or 40 weeks, after the first day of the last menstrual period. It assumes a textbook 28-day cycle and is superseded by ultrasound dating when the two disagree.
- Pre-pregnancy BMI : glossary term
- Body mass index calculated from weight before conception, used as the standard starting point for recommended pregnancy weight-gain ranges.
- Waist-to-hip ratio : glossary term
- Waist circumference divided by hip circumference, used alongside BMI to describe where body fat is carried.

Common body composition questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. So it can misclassify very muscular people as overweight and underestimate risk in people with low muscle mass. It is a population-level screening tool, useful for tracking trends in one person over time, not a diagnosis for an individual.
Why do body-fat estimates from different methods disagree?
Circumference-based methods, skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance and DEXA scans all measure different proxies and carry different error margins. Use one method consistently and track the trend , not comparing an absolute number across methods.
What is considered a healthy body fat percentage?
Ranges differ by sex, age and source, and 'healthy' athletic ranges sit lower than general population ranges. There is no single correct number. A qualified professional can interpret a result against your specific health context.
Does waist-to-hip ratio matter more than BMI?
It captures where fat is carried, which BMI does not. Central fat carries different health associations than fat elsewhere. Neither measure alone is complete. Clinicians often use several together.
Can I trust a home tape-measure body-fat estimate?
It is reasonably consistent when the same person measures the same way each time, which makes it useful for tracking change. Small measurement errors matter less for a trend than for a single absolute reading.
Is pregnancy weight gain supposed to be steady every week?
No: the first trimester typically adds very little weight, with most of the recommended gain arriving in the second and third trimesters. A simple weeks-to-date proration is a rough guide, not what a real trimester-by-trimester curve looks like.
What if my pregnancy weight gain is outside the recommended range?
Ranges are population guidance from pre-pregnancy BMI category. Individual factors, multiples, medical conditions, starting nutrition status, can make a different pattern appropriate. Discuss any concern with your OB-GYN or midwife instead of adjusting intake based on a calculator alone.
Do pregnancy weight-gain ranges apply to twins?
No. Recommended gain is higher for multiple pregnancies and is not modeled here. Use your care provider's guidance for a multiple pregnancy.
Is a lower weight always healthier?
No. A weight below the healthy range carries its own risks, and weight alone does not show muscle, bone or where fat sits. Use the range as a screen, and ask a clinician what suits you.
Does the BMI range change with age?
The 18.5 to 24.9 range applies to adults. Children and teens are read against age and sex percentiles instead, and some clinicians judge the range differently for older adults. A doctor can say which applies to you.
How often should I measure my body?
Weekly or monthly is enough for most trends. Daily weight swings by a pound or more from water, food and salt, so one day says little. Measure at the same time of day under the same conditions.
Why is the healthy weight range so wide?
Height is the only input. People of the same height differ in frame, muscle and fat, so a fair guideline has to leave room. The width of the range shows the uncertainty instead of hiding it.
People also ask
Body Composition calculator questions
Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
It is a screening tool that ignores muscle, age and where fat sits, so it can mislead for athletes and older adults.
How is body fat percentage estimated?
From body measurements in a formula such as the US Navy method, which is convenient but can be off by several percentage points.
How is a due date calculated?
By adding 280 days to the first day of the last menstrual period, or adjusting from the conception date, and only about 5% of babies arrive on that day.
