How to interpret the result
College cost has two clocks: the years until enrollment and the years of study. A school that costs $30,000 a year today would cost about $48,867 in the first year if the fee rises 5 percent a year for ten years, and four years at that level is about $195,467. The model holds the cost at the first-year figure during study, so real totals are higher when costs keep rising while the student is enrolled.
Before you rely on it
What to check
Look up the net price for each school, which subtracts grants and scholarships, and use the sticker price only as an upper bound.
The common error
Where people go wrong with college cost calculator
Using an average national figure for a specific family. The range between schools and aid packages is wide, and the average hides it.

Where the inputs come from
Current annual college cost is the full cost of attendance at the school you are considering, including tuition, fees, room and board, books and personal expenses, from its net price calculator or cost page. Education inflation is the yearly increase; college prices have often risen faster than general inflation, though rates vary by sector and year. Years until enrollment and years of study set the timeline. Use net price, after typical aid, if you expect to receive it.
Using the estimated total future college cost in a real decision
Use it as the target for the college savings goal calculator.
When the result stops applying
The projection uses one inflation rate for all years and one school, while actual increases vary year to year. Sticker prices differ from what students pay after grants and scholarships. Costs differ enormously between public in-state, out-of-state and private schools. The estimate excludes lost earnings and interest on loans.
What to compare it with
Turn the total into monthly savings with the college savings goal calculator, and project a plan with the 529 growth page. The scholarship impact and student loan pages show how aid and borrowing change the picture. The education ROI calculator compares cost with earnings.

Frequently asked questions
How fast are college costs rising?
Historically faster than general inflation, though the pace varies by year and sector. Planners often assume 4% to 6% for long-range projections.
What is the cost of attendance?
Tuition and fees plus room and board, books, transportation and personal expenses, as estimated by the school. It is higher than tuition alone.
Is the sticker price what students pay?
Not usually. Grants and scholarships lower the net price, so use the school's net price calculator for a better estimate.
