Where people go wrong with taxes & paycheck numbers
The common error is using the top bracket as if it applied to all income, when only the slice above each threshold is taxed at that rate. Another is forgetting payroll taxes, state tax or the difference between withholding and actual liability. These are educational estimates: filing status, credits and deductions vary, and a tax professional or the official forms decide the real figure. Brackets are slices. Only the top slice is taxed higher.

Taxes & Paycheck terms
- Adjusted gross income : glossary term
- Total income less specific adjustments permitted before deductions are applied. Many credits and phase-outs are measured against it, not against taxable income.
- Capital gains : glossary term
- The difference between disposition proceeds and adjusted basis after applicable selling costs.
- Effective tax rate : glossary term
- Estimated total tax divided by the selected income measure.
- Progressive tax : glossary term
- A system where higher slices of income are taxed at higher rates. Crossing a bracket reprices only the income above the threshold, never what came before.
- Standard deduction : glossary term
- A fixed amount subtracted from income instead of itemising. Because it is substantial, many households receive no incremental benefit from deductible expenses.
- Tax-equivalent yield : glossary term
- The taxable yield needed to equal a tax-exempt yield at an assumed marginal tax rate.

Common taxes & paycheck questions
Why is my take-home pay lower than I expected?
Gross pay is reduced by income tax withholding, payroll contributions, and any pre-tax deductions for retirement, health coverage or other benefits. Pre-tax deductions lower taxable income. So they reduce take-home by less than their full amount, which is why the arithmetic rarely matches a simple percentage estimate.
Will a raise put me in a higher tax bracket and cost me money?
Not under the rate schedule. Only income above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so more gross income always produces more net income. The genuine exceptions are credits and subsidies with eligibility cliffs, which are separate from brackets and can behave that way.
Should I adjust my withholding?
If you received a large refund, too much was withheld and the money was unavailable all year. If you owed a large amount, too little was withheld and underpayment charges may apply. Landing near zero is generally optimal, and the correction is an updated withholding certificate with your employer.
What is the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit?
A deduction reduces taxable income. So it saves tax equal to its amount times your marginal rate. A credit reduces the tax bill directly. A credit is therefore worth more than an equally sized deduction for anyone below the top rate. Some are refundable while others are not.
Do I need to make estimated tax payments?
Generally yes if you have meaningful income not subject to withholding: self-employment, investment, rental or large gains. Charges arise from paying late instead of from a wrong final return. So the schedule matters independently of the annual total.
How is self-employment tax different from income tax?
It is an additional obligation covering both halves of payroll-type contributions, computed on net earnings , not gross revenue, with a portion generally deductible in computing income tax. Estimates built only from expected income tax fall materially short.
Should I itemise or take the standard deduction?
Whichever is larger. Because the standard deduction is substantial, many households receive no incremental benefit from deductible expenses, since those only help once the itemised total exceeds the standard amount in aggregate.
Are these tax calculators a substitute for filing?
No. They produce simplified federal estimates for planning a withholding change or sizing a payment. They do not handle state or local tax, the full range of credits and their eligibility rules, or the interactions between them, and they are not a return.

Taxes & Paycheck calculator questions
How is federal income tax calculated?
Income is taxed in brackets, so each rate applies only to the income within its range, after the standard or itemized deduction.
Why is my bonus taxed at a higher rate?
Employers often withhold a flat supplemental rate, but the actual tax is settled when you file, so the difference returns as a refund.
What is the difference between withholding and tax owed?
Withholding is what your employer sends in during the year, and tax owed is the final amount, so the gap is your refund or bill.
