Bonds & Fixed Income calculators

Bonds & Fixed Income calculators: Price bonds, compare yields and measure interest-rate sensitivity. The category holds 16 tools, including the Bond Price Calculator, the Yield to Maturity Calculator and the Bond Current Yield Calculator.

Bond Price and Yield to Maturity are the core pair: one gives the fair price for a yield, the other the yield for a price. Current Yield is a quick income measure, and Yield to Call applies to callable bonds. Duration, DV01 and Convexity measure how much a bond's price moves when rates change, and Bond Portfolio Duration does the same for a group. Treasury Bill, Zero-Coupon, TIPS, Real Yield and Muni vs. Taxable help compare types, and Bond Ladder plans maturities. Duration is the risk.

Among the tools here are Bond Price Calculator, Yield to Maturity Calculator, Bond Current Yield Calculator, Bond Duration Calculator, DV01 Calculator, Treasury Bill Calculator, Bond Ladder Calculator, Muni vs. Taxable Bond Calculator, and 8 more that follow the same pattern of formula, worked example, limits and sources.

Where people go wrong with bonds & fixed income numbers

When rates rise, bond prices fall, which surprises people who think of bonds as safe. Longer duration means a larger price swing for the same rate change. Yield to maturity assumes you hold to maturity and reinvest coupons at the same yield, and callable bonds can be redeemed early. Comparing a municipal bond with a taxable one requires the tax-equivalent yield, not the stated coupon. Rates up, prices down. Remember that.

Bonds & Fixed Income terms

Accrued interest : glossary term
Interest that has been earned on a security or loan but not yet paid. Bonds are quoted clean, without it, and settle dirty, with it added to the amount that changes hands.
Basis point : glossary term
One hundredth of one percentage point; 100 basis points equal 1 percentage point.
Bond coupon : glossary term
The cash interest payment a bond makes on each scheduled date. The coupon rate applied to face value sets its size. Rate is the percentage. Coupon is the money that changes hands.
Bond duration : glossary term
A present-value-weighted timing measure used to approximate bond-price sensitivity to yield changes.
Convexity : glossary term
The curvature of the relationship between a bond's price and its yield. It corrects duration, which is a straight-line approximation and grows less accurate as the yield move gets larger.
Coupon rate : glossary term
The annual interest a bond pays as a percentage of its face value. It is fixed at issue, which is why the price must move when market yields change.
Current yield : glossary term
A bond’s annual coupon cash flow divided by its current market price.
Duration : glossary term
The umbrella term for how long a bond's money effectively takes to arrive. That timing decides how much its price moves when yields change. Two specific forms exist and they are not interchangeable. Macaulay duration is a present-value-weighted time in years. Modified duration is a percentage price sensitivity. Longer maturity and lower coupon increase both.
DV01 : glossary term
The approximate dollar price change of a bond or portfolio for a one-basis-point yield change.
Face value : glossary term
The amount a bond repays at maturity, also called par. Coupons are calculated on it, and market price can sit above or below it.

Common bonds & fixed income questions

Should I buy individual bonds or a bond fund?

Individual bonds give a known maturity and known cash flows if held, plus control over credit selection, at the cost of concentration and administration. Funds give diversification and liquidity with no maturity date. If you need a specific amount on a specific date, individual bonds or a ladder fit better.

How does a call feature affect a bond?

It lets the issuer redeem early, which they will do when refinancing is favourable. Precisely when yields have fallen and you would otherwise have a gain. This caps price appreciation, so for a callable bond trading above par, yield to call is usually the more relevant figure.

Are Treasury bonds risk-free?

They carry minimal credit risk but real interest-rate risk: their price falls when yields rise, and selling before maturity can realise a loss. They also carry inflation risk, since fixed coupons lose purchasing power. Risk-free refers to default, not to value.

What is a bond ladder and why use one?

Capital split across staggered maturities so a portion matures regularly and reinvests at prevailing rates. It removes the need to forecast: rising rates reinvest higher, falling rates leave longer rungs locked in. The cost is an average yield , not the best one.

How are bonds taxed?

Treatment varies by issuer type and jurisdiction: interest on some government securities is exempt from certain taxes while other interest is fully taxable, and gains on sale are treated separately from interest. Compare after-tax yields at your own rates instead of headline figures.

Bonds & Fixed Income calculator questions

Why do bond prices fall when interest rates rise?

New bonds pay higher rates, so existing lower-rate bonds must sell at a lower price to give a comparable yield.

What does duration tell me?

It estimates how much a bond's price changes for a one percentage point change in rates, measured in years.

What is yield to maturity?

It is the annualized return if you buy at today's price, hold to maturity and receive all coupons and the face value.
