Debt & Credit calculators: Understand payoff time, interest, utilization and consolidation. The category holds 14 tools, including the Credit Card Payoff Calculator, the Credit Card Interest Calculator and the Balance Transfer Calculator.
Credit Card Payoff and Debt Payoff Date show how long a balance takes at your payment. Debt Snowball and Debt Avalanche calculators compare the two main strategies, and Snowball vs. Avalanche shows the difference in interest and time. Balance Transfer and Debt Consolidation test whether moving debt lowers the cost. Credit Utilization and Debt-to-Income measure the ratios lenders look at, and Credit Card Minimum Payment shows what paying only the minimum costs. Small wins add up.
Among the tools here are Credit Card Payoff Calculator, Credit Card Interest Calculator, Balance Transfer Calculator, Debt Consolidation Calculator, Credit Utilization Calculator, Debt-to-Income Calculator, Debt-Free Date Calculator, Credit Card Minimum Payment Calculator, and 6 more that follow the same pattern of formula, worked example, limits and sources.

Where people go wrong with debt & credit numbers
Paying only the minimum can stretch a card balance over decades and multiply the interest paid. Balance transfers look free, but a transfer fee and the promotional period ending can erase the saving. Consolidating debt into one loan without changing spending often leads to running the cards up again. Choosing snowball or avalanche is less important than picking one and paying steadily. Pay the plan, not the minimum. Interest waits for no one.

Common debt & credit questions
Should I pay off the highest rate or the smallest balance first?
Highest rate first minimises total interest, always. Smallest balance first clears accounts sooner and produces visible progress at a modest interest cost. Model both on your actual balances: when the difference is small, choose the one you will finish. When it is large, choose the cheaper one.
How long will it take to pay off my credit card?
It depends far more on whether you pay a fixed amount or the floating minimum than on the balance. A minimum that is a percentage of the balance shrinks as the balance falls, which stretches the payoff enormously. Fixing a dollar amount above the current minimum is the single change that shortens it most.
Will a balance transfer save me money?
Only if the interest avoided during the promotional period exceeds the transfer fee, and only if the balance is actually cleared before the promotion ends. The two common failures are not clearing it in time and treating the freed credit line as new spending capacity.
How is credit utilisation calculated?
Balances divided by limits, usually measured at statement date instead of averaged. This is why a card paid in full every month can still report high utilisation if the statement closes at a peak, and why a mid-cycle payment can change the reported figure without changing what you spend.
Does closing a credit card help my score?
Usually not. Closing removes that limit from the utilisation calculation, which can raise the reported ratio on remaining cards, and it can eventually shorten average account age. The reasons to close a card are generally behavioural or fee-related.
Is debt consolidation a good idea?
It helps when the new rate and fees genuinely beat the blended cost of what it replaces and the cleared accounts are not used again. It converts revolving debt into an installment loan with a real end date, which is a structural improvement. Provided the balances do not simply rebuild.
How long does negative information stay on a credit report?
Reporting periods are set by regulation and vary by the type of information, with different limits for different events. Because the periods differ and are statutory, check the current rule for the specific item , not assuming one figure covers everything.

Debt & Credit calculator questions
Should I use the snowball or avalanche method?
Avalanche pays the least interest by targeting the highest rate first, while snowball clears small balances first and can help motivation.
How is credit utilization calculated?
Divide your total card balances by your total credit limits. Keeping it below about 30% is a common guideline for scores.
Is a balance transfer worth it?
It can be if the transfer fee is lower than the interest saved and you pay the balance off before the promotional rate ends.
