Where people go wrong with auto finance numbers
The payment is the number dealers emphasize, but loan term, sales tax, fees and interest decide the real price. A long loan on a fast-depreciating car can leave you owing more than it is worth, which the Negative Equity calculator shows. Leases have mileage limits and end-of-term fees. Rebates and low-rate offers often cannot be combined, so use Cash Back vs. Low Interest to compare them. Watch the term. Length hides cost.

Common auto finance questions
Is it better to lease or buy?
Over one lease term, leasing often costs less in cash outflow because you pay only for depreciation. Over a longer horizon, buying and keeping the vehicle past the loan usually wins, because the years without a payment are where the saving accumulates. It depends heavily on how long you actually keep vehicles.
What is a money factor and how does it compare to a rate?
It is how the finance charge in a lease is expressed. Multiply it by 2,400 to get an approximate equivalent annual interest rate, which is the only way to judge whether a lease's finance component is competitive against a loan.
Should I take the rebate or the low-rate financing?
They are usually alternatives. Compare the total cost of subsidised financing on the full price against market-rate financing on the reduced price. Either can win depending on the size of the rebate, the gap between the rates and the term length.
What does it mean to be upside down on a car loan?
The balance exceeds the vehicle's value, which is common early in a long loan because depreciation is front-loaded while principal reduction is not. It only becomes a problem when a sale, trade or total loss forces the shortfall to be paid immediately.
Do I need gap insurance?
It pays the difference between the vehicle's insured value and the loan balance after a total loss. It matters most when the loan is long, the deposit was small, or negative equity was rolled in: the same conditions that make the gap large and persistent.
How long should an auto loan be?
Short enough that you are not underwater for most of it. Longer terms lower the payment and increase both total interest and the years spent owing more than the car is worth, which is a poor fit for anyone who changes vehicles regularly.
Does a trade-in reduce what I finance?
Its equity does: the value less any outstanding balance. If the balance exceeds the value, the trade increases what you finance , not reducing it. Establish the value and the payoff separately before treating a trade as a deposit.

Auto Finance calculator questions
What is the 20/4/10 rule for buying a car?
Put 20% down, finance for no more than 4 years and keep total car costs under 10% of gross income.
Is it better to lease or buy a car?
Leasing has lower payments but no ownership, while buying costs more monthly and builds equity, so the answer depends on mileage and how long you keep cars.
What is negative equity on a car loan?
It means you owe more than the car is worth, which is common with long loans and small down payments, and it complicates trade-ins.
